Character Background
• History: Wiki link
• Core Relationships:
Sunny's most important relationships are with his childhood friends, who he has been estranged from for four years. While I will be focusing on the real life versions of his friends and his relationship with them, it is important to note that Sunny has been imagining his friends in his headspace for all of those years. He never stopped thinking about them, loving them, and missing them. He is so desperate to be with them again that he creates adventures with them inside his head. Even without them physically there, they have been a constant force throughout his life.
Kel- Sunny's self-proclaimed best friend. Kel is the one that gets Sunny to come out of his house. When he learned that Sunny was moving, he kept trying to contact him, until finally three days before moving day Kel knocks on Sunny's door. Out of all of his friends, he's the one that clearly never gave up on Sunny. He greets him happily when the door opens and spends the day with him like this wasn't the first time they'd seen each other in four years. Though Sunny doesn't say anything, he's pleased to be spending time with Kel. He agrees to clash their pet rocks when he buys his and goes along with whatever plans Kel has. One of Kel's skills is to literally encourage Sunny. He's constantly supportive and caring towards Sunny and in the end Sunny recognizes how much he wants to be there for Kel in return.
Aubrey- Aubrey's relationship with Sunny is more tumultuous than Kel's is. For years she felt abandoned by not just Sunny but by everyone in the friend group. She reacts aggressively to him and to Kel when they meet again for the first time. They actually fight and Sunny lashes out at her with a knife without thinking since he is so used to fighting that way in headspace. She reacts with horror and questions what's wrong with him. Her anger continues throughout the next few days whenever she sees him, questioning why he was back. They ultimately make up with the help of Hero. She realizes she's been unfair and admits that she still cares deeply about Sunny. Sunny likewise cares deeply about her and her hope that he can find peace or happiness heartens him greatly.
Hero- Kel's older brother, but he may as well have been Sunny's older brother too for how close they were. Hero always looked out for Sunny in a big brotherly way while they were younger, and Sunny always looked up to him for it. When they see each other again after the four years, their relationship is immediately amiable. Hero instantly risks his life to save Sunny from drowning and to make sure the younger teen is okay. He's happy to see Sunny after all this time and deeply hopes that he has been doing well. The two of them share the feeling that they had abandoned their friends in their time of need and Hero swears he will be there for all of them again. This promise sticks with Sunny, and he resolves to do the same.
Basil- Sunny's former best friend. Their relationship is complicated. The two had always gotten along very well, existing in a quiet camaraderie where they could show affection for each other by simply holding the other's hand. They cherished each other deeply, but unfortunately this is what resulted in Basil attempting to cover up Sunny's accidental murder of his sister by faking her suicide. Basil wanted to save Sunny and keep him safe, but his actions made the situation worse. Though Sunny promised to be there for Basil, he was not and instead retreated inside his head. With how Black Space treats Basil- killing him violently over and over again -it's clear that Sunny holds some deep resentment for the other boy. He loves him still, however, going out of his way several times to save Basil. Basil likewise has some resentment of Sunny for abandoning him, but still loves Sunny and wants to protect him. The two ultimately end up fighting due to their guilt, resentment and desperation. They both wind up in the hospital and Sunny loses his eye, but he remembers how Basil wants to make new memories and for them to try to forgive themselves. He's able to look at Basil and smile, knowing that the two will at least have each other no matter what now.
Mari- Though deceased, Sunny's sister Mari plays a heavy role in his life still. Despite imagining horrifying visions of her tormenting him for what he'd done to her, in reality she wants him to forgive himself. This is assuming that Sunny does occasionally see Mari's actual spirit. She loves him deeply and hates seeing him torture himself for the accident. More than anything, she wants him to be able to forgive himself and move on from what happened- to truly start living again. Sunny does take this to heart and at the end of the game starts the difficult process of doing just that. He chooses to carry on, no matter how hard it might be.
Character Personality Through Key Moments
(2+) Positive Experiences:
Sunny is a kind person. When leaving his house for the first time in four years, he makes it a point to go around the town and help other people out. He does everything from simply finding a man's remote, to encouraging a budding artist, to fixing a couple's marriage. This results in him becoming universally loved by the town of Faraway within the course of only three days. He also does his best to help his friends, attempting to protect Basil from bullying and then later save him from drowning. He tries his best for the sake of other people.
Sunny is a courageous person, though he would probably not think so himself. Despite the fact he hadn't interacted with anyone but his mother for years, he has no issues going up and talking with strangers. When Kel tells him to wait for a church sermon to be over before they entered a church to find Aubrey, he immediately barged in. Despite having a phobia of water and drowning, he didn't hesitate to jump into a lake in order to save Basil from drowning himself. Simply opening the door for Kel when he knocked was an act of bravery. The outside world deeply frightened Sunny, and it took a lot of effort for him to leave his home. The ultimate decision to tell his friends the truth of what happened to Mari is the culmination of his inner strength. He knows that his friends may hate him for it, but he's willing to accept it and bear the consequences. Simply choosing to carry on with his life and try to forgive himself was a massive display of courage, with how difficult it was to confront the truth and defeat the voice of his inner self-loathing.
Sunny is an imaginative person. His creation of headspace shows this. It's full of wonderful environments, creatures and characters. He comes up with adventures for he and his headspace friends to go on, like getting Space Boyfriend his mixtape back, or escaping from the belly of a whale.
(2+) Negative Experiences:
Sunny is self-loathing. The presence of Omori lays this out this fact well. Sunny hates himself so much he doesn't want to exist even within the world he himself created. His guilt eats him up and he cannot handle it. He doesn't believe himself worthy of being with his friends or Mari, so he created Omori to experience all of this in his stead. The fight between Sunny and Omori at the end of the game has Omori repeating all of the terrible things he believes about himself back at him: That his friends will never forgive him; that he's a selfish monster who doesn't care about his friends; that everyone loved Mari and he killed her; and that he doesn't even deserve to live.
Sunny has poor coping skills. His way of dealing with Mari's death and everything surrounding it was to completely close himself off from everyone. He refused to leave his house and instead started living life inside of his head. At first it was White Space, a blank white room where there was nothing and so nothing bad ever happened there. He didn't need to think about anything. He pushed all of his negative thoughts and feelings deep down into himself to an area called Black Space. This is where the truth of what happened to Mari lay, too. He pushed all of it down so deep he developed dissociative amnesia regarding the subject. Then he created headspace, a world where he could play with his friends and see Mari without worrying about the reality of the situation. Even that was too much for him, though, and he tried to erase his existence entirely, using Omori as an avatar for him instead.
He's working on both of the above issues, trying to recover after the Good Ending, but healing from trauma and dealing with mental illness is never a simple process and takes time.
Deer Country Attributes
• Canon Powers: Sunny has no powers in canon. He's a regular human teenager, one who has been malnourished and a homebody for a long while, so if anything he is less powerful than the average person. He is able to Focus, however, in order to make himself hit harder.
• Blood Type: Paleblood
• Omen: Mewo. She is a little black cat that was once his sister's. She guides him home (literally and metaphorically) several times in OMORI and constantly has a presence in Sunny's White Space.
• Blessed Day: July 20th
• Patron Pthumerian: The Reckoning
• Blood Power Manifestation:
In OMORI, a main mechanic is using emotions to manipulate battles. Keeping in line with this, Sunny will use different emotions to buff/debuff himself and others. He is able to instill these feelings within others using his blood magic. Sadness will increase a person's defense, but lowers speed and causes damage to be taken to the equivalent of MP instead of HP. This might be considered a person's blood magic ability or their own personal abilities from their canon. Happiness increases speed and chance of dealing a critical greatly, but causes a person to be unable to land hits on opponents as well. Anger increases attack and decreases defense. Fear increases damage taken, but at higher levels can increase attack and decrease defense (but to a lesser extent than anger).
All of these have several different 'tiers' of emotions, wherein the buffs/debuffs of each grows stronger each tier. For example, first tier for sadness is simply sad, second tier is depressed, and third tier is miserable. Additionally, barring fear, each of these emotions are stronger against one of the others ala rock, paper, scissors. Sadness beats happiness, happiness beats anger, anger beats sadness.
The higher level emotions are also extremely intense, to a disturbing degree.
Additionally, Sunny is able to pull people's minds into White Space, Black Space, or headspace. No harm can actually befall them there, and their physical bodies will seem to be asleep. White Space will always be a almost completely blank white room. Headspace and Black Space can change depending on who is in there, however. Headspace will be influenced by a person's creativity and will mostly be a fun, imaginative time. Black Space, however, will be influenced by the feelings and memories a person keeps repressed. There will be horrors there twisted by such thoughts. It will not be a good time.
Sunny himself may or may not choose to be present in any one of these worlds.
